Holiday Concert Reminders

Reminders for Dec. 12 Holiday Band Concert:

  • What to wear: Black bottoms (pants or girls may wear a skirt of appropriate length), white shirt (short or long sleeved….. guys wear a tie – any color or kind), black shoes and socks. Santa or holiday hats are optional if you would like to wear them.
  • Take care of bathroom issues before the program starts. Do not have your phones with you….. you don’t need them and they will only distract you. If you are caught on your phone during the concert, then it will be taken.
  • Make sure to have all music for grade level and jazz/honor band performances….. do not depend on a neighbor!!
  • Make sure to have your instrument in working order and cleaned with extra reeds with you (woodwinds)
  • You are to be there at 6:00 pm at Bartlett High School auditorium.   Have your parents bring cans with them to donate for the food drive since we don’t have an admission to this concert. Leave your cases at home or in your car.
  • 6th grade reports to the stage for warm up and 7th and 8th grade will report upstairs to the balcony unless someone tells you differently (working on trying to get a room to warm you up in).   7th grade sit on left side and 8th grade sit on right side. I will plan to come up there to warm you up.   I will have parents in charge of you to monitor your behavior and escort you to the back stage area when it is your turn to play. You are expected to have exceptional behavior during the concert and be a good audience member. This means no talking, no phones, no getting in and out of your seat. Do not sit next to someone that could get you in trouble. If your name is taken and given to me, there will be consequences with concert grade deduction and next week’s Thursday movie time taken away. Act respectfully.
  • Also you are expected to stay for the concert’s entirety to respect all band members. If there is an emergency, then please put it in writing or email Mrs. Sanders.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful concert next week. You’ve worked hard. Practice your music over the weekend and be prepared to show off what you can do.

Schedule and announcements for this week 12/5-12/9

The countdown is on until our holiday concert and the end of the nine weeks and Christmas break!  We are very busy this week and here is the schedule:
Monday - Jazz Band until 4; Poinsettia pickup after school until 4
Tuesday - 7th grade required rehearsal until 4
Wednesday - 6th grade required rehearsal until 4; Deadline to audition for solos or ensembles for the holiday concert
Friday - All-West help session until 4; Jazz band nursing home permission forms due

Make sure you have your concert black uniform for next Monday's concert and make sure you are practicing!  We will need help from parents on set up/tear down and student monitoring.  Look for emails to go out about the concert.

We had 27 students show up to the help session last Friday and had about 10 high school/college kids here helping.  Thank you so much for those that came.... I heard great progress being made and look forward to even more coming this Friday.  We are now a little over a month away with Jan. 14 auditons at Arlington High.  I am signing up all 7th and 8th grade non beginners (61) and there are 7 6th graders....... 68 kids!  That is great!  Now..... let's buckle down on our music and scales and use Smart Music to help us on sight reading.  We can do it!

I have been busy listening to Smart Music this morning and it appears that MANY MANY of you have not submitted anything so far.  Smart Music is due no later than next Tuesday 12/13 but I really need for you to do a little bit at a time and get on this so that I can listen to them and get them graded.  I am very busy with family and church activites in the next few weeks as well and had hoped that more people would have turned things in for me to listen to so that I could get ahead.  Please do not wait until the last minute and please only submit your best.  I have had to reassign some people things just because they submitted 50 or 60% and spent just over a minute on them.  It is not a recording tool but a teaching tool.  You are in control of when you press the submit key and should only submit when you are happy with your score and you think I would be happy hearing it.  Use it as a tool to slow things down, click on my part and play along with it, use the clicks, and to also listen back to yourself.  For my 7th and 8th graders, the All-West music that is posted will take time and should not be done in one sitting.  Please work on it a little each day and try your hardest not to submit less than an 80% for accuracy.  Also try to work on dynamics and articulation - Smart Music will not assess you on these things but I will when I give you feedback. For 6th and 7th graders these Smart Musics are worth 120 points and 7th/8th graders they are worth a collective 200 points, so please do them and take them seriously.
Let's have a fabulous week!

New Smart Music Assignments due 12/13

I just posted several Smart Music assignments that are due Tuesday 12/13.  Do not procrastinate on this as it will take some time for most of you and also some time for me to listen to.  Please put practice into these and only submit your best work.

For 6th graders, you will have assignments from your book #48, 49,55,57,58, and 65.
For 7th and 8th grade beginners, you will have A, E, B, and Gb scales that we are working on in class as well as #78, 84, 98, and 106 in your book.
For 7th and 8th grade regular class, you will have A, E, B, and Gb scales that we are working on in class and will have your three All-West excerpts separately as song #1, song #2, and song #3.  Please slow these down if you need to and only submit your best work.  Try to work on dynamics and articulation too even though Smart Music will not assess you on this.  I hope to give everyone some feedback on this so that you will be ready for Jan. 14 auditions.

Schedule and announcements for this week 11/14-11/18

Great job at the Veteran's Day events last week for Heroes luncheon and the City of Bartlett Veteran's Day ceremony.  You played so well and I'm so proud of you!  I got so many compliments from people and it meant so much to our veterans and to our community.

We will be working hard in the upcoming weeks to prepare for our holiday concert.  Please make sure you are practicing that music dilligently.

Honor band members need to make sure that they have shown me report cards from the first nine weeks.  If there was a grade issue, then I need to see interims that come home tomorrow.  Also, we are really short on getting commitment forms and trip deposits in...... please get those in ASAP. Jazz band should receive their commitment form at Tuesday's rehearsal.

Here is the schedule for this week:
Monday - Honor band 2:15-4:00

Tuesday - Jazz band 2:15-4:00; Corky's fundraiser orders are due

Wednesday - Honor Band 2:15-4:00

Thursday - Pep rally (7th and 8th graders wear band tshirt).  7th and 8th graders will also stay after school and will be fed a heavy snack (boosters will provide pizza and drink) and then we will go to perform at the basketball game.  The girls game starts at 3:30 and we plan to stay as a group for all of the girls game and the first half of the boys game (should be over at 5:15).  If students would like to stay for the entire game, then pick up should be about 5:45.  If students need to be picked up earlier than 5:15, then you will need to come inside and get them.  Make sure all students are picked up by 5:45.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Corkys Fundraiser Info

Here is the Corky's Fundraiser info in case you didn't receive it in class or email.  Orders are due tomorrow Nov. 15.  Please consider getting orders are at least ordering something for your family.  They make great "easy fixes" for the holidays and it will be helping  reduce the cost of the spring trip to Pigeon Forge.  Thank you for your support!

Veteran’s Day Memo

Here is detailed information about this week's Veteran's Day group activities.  Please email me as soon as you can at [email protected]  if you can help with equipment and pizza distribution on Thursday or Friday and please send in your $6 for your t-shirt.  Reminder - we have practice Monday and Wednesday and will also have practice on Tuesday if Monday's practice doesn't go well.  If it does go well, then we will have jazz band instead.  I will send out a text and email regarding our decision.  I'm looking forward to great performances!
