All-West TN/Appling Honor Band auditions

I have marked the audition spots of the All-West TN audition music for Appling Honor Band and will pass around the packet in class.  You can go to www.wtsboa.com and click under "What's New" and scroll down to where they posted for grades 5-8 audition music and you will find the PDF files of this music as well as mp3 files so that you can listen to them and smp files so that you can open them in Smart Music to work on them.  Please use those as tools to help you for both Appling Honor Band auditions (which should be either before or after fall break) and for All-West TN band auditions in January.

Smart Music code information should be coming this week and first assignments plan to be due on Sept. 20.  This subscription is part of your band fee, so please be getting those fees in and if you cannot pay the $115 until the end of the month, please try to pay part of it to cover this.

Band t-shirt designs for voted on last week and are in the process of finalizing the artwork and ordering them.  These are part of the band fee for students and they will be wearing them for their casual uniform.  Parents/siblings can order too and we will get a price to you as soon as possible but will need a quick turnaround.  If we can get them done int time, the 8th graders plan on wearing these to the Sept. 11 Bartlett High School middle school night at the football game.

Announcements Week of Aug. 24

Week two was very successful!  In 6th grade band we learned how to breathe correctly and form our embouchures and hand positions for the first 5 notes.  We will continue to put those notes together and work on note reading this next week but they are catching on so fast!  The 7th grade band has been working on dotted quarter note rhythms and reviewing many musical terms, played some group trios, and sightread some pieces of music.  This next week we plan on reviewing crossing the break for clarinets, lip slurs for brass, snare drum exercises, and continue review from last year.  The 8th grade band has been reviewing the cut time time signature last week and performing some marches as well as reviewing scales.  We also started working on music for the Bartlett High night on Sept. 11.  All 7th and 8th grade band students also received their All-West TN Band audition music last week and should start working on it.
This week there is parent orientation night on Tuesday for 6th grade and Thursday for 7th/8th grade at 6 pm.
Our after school help sessions will start this week and will end at 4 pm and pick up in the back parking lot. Students may bring a snack from home or bring money for the concession stand to buy a snack.  Brass and percussion sectional will be Monday and woodwinds will be Wednesday and these are open to our 7th/8th grade more experienced students to help with the All-West music.  Tuesdays will be individual practice day where anyone can stay and practice and work with each other or older students can work with younger students.
We need your t-shirt design ideas!  We know that our band t-shirt will be gray this year but need to come up with designs and vote this week because we have to get them done and back in time for the 8th graders Sept. 11 Bartlett High event.  Please submit ideas by Tuesday in class.
Thank you to all of those that have brought in copy paper, kleenex, ziplock bags, dry erase markers, pencils, etc...... Please make sure you are returning your signed forms and fees as soon as possible.  All band fees are due by 9/30 but please try to pay at least $40 of it by this week if possible because we are paying for our new Smart Music subscription codes.  Students should hopefully have that information by the end of this week on how to renew or activate Smart Music accounts.
As a reminder, please label all instruments, books, music, valve oil, sticks, etc..... There have already been several things left in the band room and when things are not labeled, it is hard to get back to students.
I hope everyone has a great week!  Practice hard!

Announcements Week of Aug. 17

Welcome to Appling Band!!!  We had a great week last week as I met new faces and welcomed back returning members.....it's going to be a great year!  Most everyone has instruments and books and we will be using them this week to learn our first notes (6th grade) and review where we left off last year with 7th and 8th graders.  All students received handouts and care and maintenance and should return matching quizzes by Tuesday 8/18.  Please return all forms this week (health, media, parent volunteer, handbook form, school instrument contracts, etc...) and get your band fees in as soon as possible.  Information is coming soon on Smart Music.  After school rehearsals will start next week so check the August calendar and updates for that.  I should also have the All-West TN audition music this week (which is also the Appling Honor Band music - excerpts).  I should also have Sonic card information this week.  I am working on getting music for the Veteran's Day program on Nov. 11 as well as the 8th grade middle school night at the Bartlett High football game on Sept. 11.  We need t-shirt ideas and please submit any ideas to your bin in the band room as soon as possible because we have to have them ready by Sept. 11.  Please mark your calendars for our first band booster meeting on Sept. 3.
Let's have a great week!
