Announcements Week of Oct. 19

I hope everyone has had a wonderful fall break!  I for one did not do a whole lot and enjoyed spending time with my family.  I hope everyone is ready for a busy next few weeks and I hope you have practiced :)

Our 6th grade band did a fabulous job at their 6th grade Meet the Band Night Concert!  I am so proud of you!  Thank you to everyone that helped with equipment, set up and tear down, and ticket sales.  We will be busy preparing for our holiday concert now which is December 14.

Monday and Tuesday this week are honor band auditions after school.  Students signed up for specific times before fall break and these should be done by around 4 pm both days.  Students are to have prepared the first six major scales on their scale sheet (I pick two) plus the chromatic scale and the marked sections of their All-West TN band audition music.  I'm looking forward to hearing how you are doing on this to see how you are preparing for the January All-West auditions.  Do your best!  I will have a second round of auditions for any open positions after Christmas break for our 6th graders and 7th/8th grade beginners (not for our veterans), but encourage you to audition now.  Remember this is the elite group that will prepare for local concert festival, elementary tour, and the spring trip that we are planning for Atlanta.

The 7th and 8th graders will be busy preparing for the open house performance on Tuesday Oct. 27.  Time and details are still TBA.  They will have required rehearsals on Wed. Oct. 21 for 7th grade and Mon. Oct. 26 for 8th grade - both over at 4 pm and pick up in the back parking lot.

The 7th and 8th graders who volunteered for the Veteran's Day performances on Nov. 11 and 12 should be working hard on that music. Our next rehearsals are not supposed to be scheduled until the first week of November.  We may schedule a rehearsal for this Friday 10/23 and I will let you know by Wednesday.

The Bartlett High School Band will perform for our 8th grade band students this Thursday 10/22 at 11:45.  Right afterwards, 7th and 8th grade band students will perform at our first pep rally of the year to get ready for basketball season.  Please be practicing this music and we will practice it in class and at our required rehearsal (7th grade).   All band students should wear their band tshirt for this event.

We will have an important band booster meeting this Thursday night at 6:30 pm in the band room.  We will be discussing open house, the Halloween dance, Veteran's Day performance, poinsettia sale, and holiday concert.  Please make every effort to attend.

Everyone should have received an email with poinsettia order forms and information.  We will have hard copies to distribute this week.  This is a great ISA fundraiser and many students have been very successful with this.  Orders will be due Friday 10/30.

We need help with some posters for the Halloween dance on October 30.  Information to include: 6:30-8:30, costume contests for scariest, funniest, and best all around.  I would love to have these by this Friday and definitely by next Monday so that we can advertise around the school.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please email me at [email protected].  Looking forward to a busy but fun few weeks!

Announcements Week of Sept. 28

Good morning!  Hard to believe we are entering our 8th week of school!  We are very excited about our laptop distribution.  All students hopefully have downloaded Smart Music to their device.  Go to www.smartmusic.com and follow the download instructions.  It should go to your download folder, open it to install, and then go to your applications folder through "finder" and drag it to your dock for easy access to it and then get rid of the Smart Music installer on your desktop.  I can not emphasize enough the importance of using this as a tool for not only your assignments, but to access things from your method books, scales, sight reading exercises, jazz improv, ear training, exploring thousands of pieces of solo literature, and helping you with your All-West TN Audition music (I have loaded this on everyone's page for you to have access to it except for percussion that is not available yet).
Please bring laptops with you to class every day because we may use them at any given time.  I plan to use them for journals and on Tuesday I plan to have you download some music composition sites as well as bookmark some websites.
Here is the schedule for this week:
Monday - Our first 6th grade required rehearsal until 4:00.  Hopefully you remember to bring your wire music stand if you have one.  Bring a snack or money for a snack and pick up is in the back parking lot.  Monday is also the deadline for the sheet fundraiser that was extended.
Tuesday - Our last individual help session until 3:30 so that students can practice with each other and use peer tutoring.
Wednesday - Our first Veteran's Day performance group rehearsal until 4:00.  This is open to all 7th and 8th grade band students and I need all 7th and 8th graders to come if they can so that we can prepare and have a good representation of our group.  Please bring wire music stands from home if you have them.
Jazz Band auditions are next Tuesday Oct. 6 and sign ups for times will be this week.  Please consider joining this group and see me if you have yet to get music.  I plan to narrow down parts by the end of the week so that you can zone in on specific parts to practice.
I also plan to post jacket and sweatshirt information this week and orders will be due next Friday Oct. 9 before we go on fall break.
I hope everyone has a great week!

Announcements Week of Sept. 21

We had a great car wash on Saturday.  Check out our Facebook page at "A.M.S. Band Bartlett TN" for pictures.  We washed approximately 50 cars and kids had a good time and worked hard.  We are working to get an update as to how much was made.  If any student is still collecting donations for their ISA, please get those in first thing this week.
Smart Music assignments are due this Monday Sept. 21.  They have been posted for over 3 weeks and as of this weekend, there were several students that still haven't started them.  I know that some have spoken to me about computer problems and are planning on doing them when they get their laptops this week, but I really need everyone to try to get these in.  You only have five songs due and need to put time into these and do your best.  I still have microphones for sale for $10 if you need one.  Please let me know if you have having trouble or if you have any questions.
Here is the schedule for this week:
Monday - Last Brass/Percussion sectional help session 2:15-4:00
Tuesday - Individual Practice 2:15-3:30
Wednesday - Last Woodwind sectional help session 2:15-4:00; Sheet fundraiser is due (Remember that you can make $23 per sheet set sold into your ISA)
Thursday - 5-8 BabyJack fundraiser night

Next Monday 9/28 - first 6th grade band required rehearsal 2:15-4:00
Tuesday 9/29 - Last Individual Practice help session 2:15-3:30
Wednesday 9/30 - First Veteran's Day performance group rehearsal 2:15-4:00 (all 7th and 8th graders that can participate.... should already have some music to be working on)

Look for information to come out this week about jackets/sweatshirts/spirit items.
Don't forget about the United States Marine Band concert at Overton High School next Saturday night 9/26 at 7 pm if you are interested.
Also, there is a marching competition at Arlington High School next week if you are interested in seeing some marching bands compete.  I will try to get a schedule posted on here.

Announcements Week of Sept. 14

We had a great night for our 8th graders at the Bartlett High School football game on Friday night.  We did get a little wet during pregame but the rest of the night was a lot of fun seeing what high school band is all about.

Both 7th and 8th graders will be using new books starting this week - 7th graders need Essential Elements 2000 Book Two and 8th grade needs the Essential Elements 2000 Book Three.  These were discussed at the beginning of the year and now we are going to use them.

Be working on Smart Music assignments - they are due 9/21.  Remember to not procrastinate, take your time on these, and only submit your best work.  Email me if you still need code information that was distributed two weeks ago.  I have microphones for sale for $10 each if you need to purchase one.

The schedule for the week is:
Monday - Woodwind sectional 2:15-4:00
Tuesday - Individual practice 2:15-3:30
Wednesday - Brass/Percussion sectional 2:15-4:00

We will have our band car wash from 10-2 this Saturday at the Hollywood Feed parking lot.  Wear your band shirt (these will be distributed Tuesday for those that did not get last week) and bring car wash supplies (bucket, sponge, old towels, etc....)  Remember to get pledges from friends and family on the form distributed in class or that I posted last week if you want any money put into your ISA.  All other donations made will be put into the band general fund.

Remember to sell sheets if you are interested in making money into your ISA.  Each sheet set sells for $40 and $23 of that will go to your ISA.
Sonic cards will be here this week.  I am so sorry for the delay on them.  If you are interested in getting them, they are $5 each and must be prepaid for.  $4.75 of that will go into your ISA.
Remember that all band dues and fees are due by the end of September.  Dues are $115 for the year and school instrument fee is $100.  We have already gotten band t-shirts and paid for Smart Music subscriptions, so we need to get that money in.  If you have questions or concerns about this or need to set up a payment plan, please email me at [email protected].

I hope everyone has a great week!

Honor and Jazz Band Audition music

I have given students the All-West TN band audition music and the marked spots (three of them) are listed on my website and we have also passed a packet around. Auditions will be the Monday and Tuesday we return from fall break (Oct. 19 and 20) If you go to www.wtsboa.com and look under What's New, you will find where they posted the junior high audition music and find your instrument and you can print the PDF file if you have lost it, listen to the MP3 file, or click on the SMP file and it will open in Smart Music.  At the top of the opened Smart Music file, you can set it to start and end to the measures of the marked honor band audition spots so that you can isolate those parts and you may also listen to it and slow down the tempos and even isolate it into smaller parts.  Please please use this as a tool to help you.
The jazz band music was made available to students this week to pick up.  Jazz Band auditions are set for Tuesday, Oct. 6.  There are five pieces and I will eventually narrow it down into smaller parts of each piece.  Students need to do a search in Smart Music under Find Music under very easy Jazz Band arrangements and will find the following songs:
Cherry Point, Side Slippen, One Sixty Blue, Power to the Chili Pepper, and It is What It Is.  Listen to these and follow your part......this will help A LOT!!
Let me know if you have any questions.  I would love to see tons of people audition!

Reminder for 8th grade band students

All 8th grade students participating in the Bartlett High 8th grade middle school night need to report to the high school cafeteria at 4:45 for pizza, then rehearsal, and then go to stadium at approximately 6:15.  Students that are not there on time to walk in with the band will have to pay admission.  Parents will have to pay admission if they wish to attend.  All students need to wear their new band t-shirts and bring music and instrument.  We should be done with the game at approximately 9:15.  I'm really looking forward to this event!

Here is the car wash pledge sheet.  Students will collect pledges from family and friends and that money will be credited to the child's ISA.  They can pledge per car or a flat donation.  Students must work the event for money to go to ISA.  For any other cars that come in, that money will go to the general fund.
Here is the order form for the bed sheet fundraiser.  Orders are due 9/23.  All sizes are $40 and $23 per set will be credited to your child's ISA.

Sept. 3 Band Booster meeting agenda

Here is the Sept. 3 band booster meeting agenda from last week in case you missed the meeting.  There was a lot of fundraiser information discussed including Sonic card information (bring in $5 per sonic card that you want and $4.75 will go into your ISA..... we should have those next week and I'm sorry for the delay), Bed sheet fundraiser (will send attachment on the webpage..... due Sept. 23 and all sizes sell for $40 and $23 per set will go into your ISA, and band car wash (Sept. 19 from 10-2 at Hollywood Feed.  Students that take pledges will receive that money into their ISA and all other cars' donations will go to the general fund.... must work to get ISA credit and students can work all or part of the time).  There will also be a Baby Jacks night on Sept. 24 where the band will make 20% of the sales if they say Appling Band when they place the order.  Let us know if you have any ideas or if you would like to work in a particular area.
