Classroom Expectations/WHAT System

For social studies students:
  • In my classroom, students are expected to enter quickly, quietly, and begin Bell Work assignments.
  • They should have required supplies with them daily including completed assignments (in an organized binder) and a charged laptop. (See Procedures and Expectations document link, provided to students on August 9.)
  • Students are expected to be respectful of the people, the environment, and the instructional time. Positive reinforcements are in place regularly including attendance rewards, a birthday cookie in their birth month, stickers, notes, emails, verbal compliments, candy treats, and PBIS points.
  • Participation is imperative and required. Each quarter a participation grade of 100 will be entered. Students then have to complete assignments and homework, be on-task and attentive during class, ask and answer questions, work with groups when directed, have their supplies, and so forth. A 5-point deduction will be made for missing or incomplete work or for consistently not doing any of the above behaviors effectively. The 100 score could be reduced throughout the quarter. As I told the students, "You already have a 100! Now you just have to keep it!"
  • Additional behavioral consequences follow the school-wide system below.

THE "WHAT" DISCIPLINE SYSTEM

WHAT is the acronym for our discipline system. The WHAT system is meant to reinforce and teach what we expect from the students. WHAT covers student behavioral expectations in the classrooms, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, buses, and flex areas such as during assemblies.

          W – Work to the Best of Your Ability

       H – Have What You Need to Succeed

       A – Act as a Responsible Student

       T- Treat People, Property, and Time with Respect

**Action Steps for WHAT:

The number of WHAT slips yields the following consequences:

     1 WHAT Slip   -    Written Warning

          2 WHAT Slips -    Note home to parent (likely an e-mail)

          3 WHAT Slips -    Phone call home and silent lunch

          4 WHAT Slips -    Detention

          5 WHAT Slips -    Required Parent Conference**

          6 WHAT Slips -    Office Referral

**Conduct is as follows for the WHAT Discipline Plan.

E = 0-1 Slips

G = 2 Slips

S = 3-4 Slips

N = 5 Slips

U = 6+ slips
