Announcements for next week 9/24-9/28

Monday is originally on the calendar for All-West brass/percussion help session but I am changing it to be for anyone needing help with their All-West/Honor Band music..... this will be the last help session offered before our honor band auditions on Oct. 15-16.  This will be over at 4 pm

Tuesday will be the last individual help session for beginners and peer tutors that we offer..... over at 4 pm

Wednesday is a REQUIRED rehearsal for the 6th grade band to prepare for the Oct. 2 Meet the Band Night concert.  6th grade students need to make sure they have their concert attire which is black bottoms (pants or girls may wear a skirt), white shirt (short or long sleeved but guys need a button up shirt and need to wear a tie - any kind or color), and black socks and shoes (or the darkest that you have.... no tennis shoes).  Sometimes you can find things at goodwill or Salvation Army or ask family members or Walmart or Payless.  If you need help getting your clothes do not be afraid to ask..... I have connections and can help you.

Any sixth graders wishing to audition for a solo or ensemble for the concert needs to be heard in class or during our rehearsal on Tuesday or after rehearsal on Wednesday.

Our 7th and 8th graders did an AWESOME job at the football game Thursday night!  So proud!  I have posted pics/video on our A.M.S. Band Bartlett, TN Facebook page if you want to take a look.

8th graders need to sign and return their permission slips for the 8th grade night next Friday.... turn in by Wednesday.

7th and 8th graders will be getting new music for open house starting next week and going on in their method books.  7th grade will need to have Book Two by next Tuesday or will be penalized by grade deduction and what slips..... they have been told this is coming for the past 6 weeks.

Please encourage your child to practice and get in a routine now that we have been in school for a while..... they have plenty to practice!
Have a great weekend!

8th Grade Band Night Memo 2018

Our 8th graders will be performing next Friday night Sept. 28 at the Bartlett High School football game with the other 8th graders from Bon Lin and Elmore Park and with the high school marching band.  I have attached the information that was sent out in class today with the details.  I will need the signed permission form returned by next Wednesday please.  Students should be practicing Bartlett Fight Song, Hey Baby, Funkytown, the Star Spangled Banner, and Hip Hop Stadium Blasters.
If for some reason you have a valid reason why you cannot attend the event, please email Mrs. Sanders or send a note in writing so that it may be excused..... otherwise this is a required event and will be a lot of fun for the kids and a great chance to see what high school band is all about.
Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Veteran's Day update

I have 29 kids that have turned in commitment forms for Veteran's Day and I hope to get that music copied by Monday after school to distribute.  If you have not yet committed please do so by turning in the form on Monday or scanning and emailing to me at [email protected] ..... it's a great program and an awesome way to support our veterans.  As of now I really need more trumpets to commit (only have 2 right now and not nearly enough) and I don't have any French horns.  All of the other instrumentation is pretty good.
Thanks!
Mrs. Sanders

AOI Complete Schedule 2018

I have attached the schedule for the Arlington High School band competition this Saturday if you are interested in attending.  If you can't go to the whole thing maybe you can see from 8:00 on for some of the larger bands ending with Bartlett High at 9:00.  I'm pretty sure tickets are $8 and programs are $2 and concessions will be sold.

Update- change for game and a few announcements

The football game that our 7th and 8th graders are playing in is at 6:30 and not 6 as originally advertised.  Everything will be pushed back 30 min.... so meet at Appling to help with equipment at 5:30, meet at the Bartlett Methodist Church parking lot next to Woodlawn at 6 wearing band t-shirt and having instrument with no case, 6 pieces of sheet music (3 cheer sheets, School Spirit, Best Day of My Life, and we added Dynamite), game is 6:30-7:30, and then pickup will be between 7:30 and 7:45 in the church parking lot.  We had a good rehearsal today (although WAY WAY too talkative..... gotta work on that!) but we sound really good and I'm looking forward to having a good time at the game.

Smart Music is due by midnight 9/20 for potential full credit.  Students have had assignments for over two weeks.  I will be listening to these and giving feedback and putting in PowerSchool hopefully by first of next week.

7th graders need to have book two purchased by next Tuesday's band class.

Students interested in auditioning for jazz band should have picked up a packet.  I have marked a sheet with marked spots that they will need to get from me and mark their music.  Auditions will be on Oct. 17.

There will be a high school marching competition at Arlington High School this Saturday 9/22 and there will be many great high school bands performing starting at 4:30 and going until about 9:30.  Bartlett High will march toward the end I think around 9..... will try to get a complete schedule.  This would be a great opportunity to see what high school band I all about.

I perform with my church Faith Baptist and our orchestra will be having a free movie music concert on Sept. 30 at 6 pm.... would love to have you attend.
And mark your calendars for Oct. 28...... the Bartlett Community Band will be performing in an awesome Halloween concert at 3 pm at BPAC.

Football game memo for 7th and 8th

Please read the attached memo for the football game this Thursday Sept. 20 that 7th and 8th graders will perform at.  We will have a required rehearsal this Wednesday 9/19 until 4:00 to help prepare for this.  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Veteran's Day memo/commitment form

Please read over the Veteran's Day memo/commitment form and sign and return by next Friday 9/21 so that I can begin copying music and can also recruit high school students if we have any instrumentation needs.  This is a very important event for our band and an awesome way to honor our Veterans.  Thanks!

6th Grade Percussion Assign Sheet 2018

Here is the 6th grade percussion assignment sheet for the Meet the Band concert on October 2nd.  Please start practicing your parts and we will be working on this during class and branching out to snare and bass drum some.  Keep practicing all of your mallet parts though.

Smart Music is up and you have assignments!

The Smart Music instruction sheets were given out in class today for kids to get their Smart Music set up.  If you need another copy of the sheet, please email me at [email protected].  I do not want to put it on my webpage because it has the code information and these are pre-paid codes that I do not want the public to see.  Please make sure you are getting your band fee in ASAP if you have not paid by the deadline which was last Friday.  We still have over 20 students that still need to pay.
One of the biggest things that is new is enrolling in a class.  Now you will have to put in an activation code to enroll.  Here is the link:
6-1 Band 1st period:
6-2 Band 2nd period:
7-1 Band 3rd period:
7-2 Band 4th period:
8-1 Band 5th period:
8-2 Band 6th period:
7th/8th Grade Beginner Class (students in this sign up for their regular period class AND this class.... do beginner level assignments first and then try to do regular assignments)

I have just assigned 5 songs per class that are due 9/20 by midnight.  Please work on these and ONLY SUBMIT YOUR BEST.  Do not settle for less than your best and get in a hurry to submit.  Also, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!  You have two weeks to do five songs.... that is plenty of time.  Use this as a tool..... slow it down if you need to, isolate parts if needed, listen to the my part and finger along, etc......Also, there is nothing that says that you only have to just do your assignments.  There is so much on smart music that you can explore with and will help you with your sight reading skills.

Here are the songs due 9/20:
6th grade:  #12, 14, 18, 23, 24 (book one)
7th grade:  #157, 164, 166, 172, 175 (book one)
8th grade:  #120, 128, 133, 140, 141 (book two)
7th/8th beginners: 14, 18, 38, 42, 44

Email me if you have any questions.
Happy practicing!

Appling Honor Band Audition Music

Honor Band auditions will be right after fall break on Oct. 15 and 16 (sign up for day and time the week before fall break).  Students will need to make sure they have good grades and conduct (no Fs or Us) and demonstrate good attendance once rehearsals start if chosen.
For the audition, students should know their chromatic scale in at least one octave (fingering chart in back of book) and should know the first six scales on the scale sheet and I will ask two of them (Concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db).  They will also need to learn the marked spots of their All-West TN band audition music which was either given in class or can be found at www.wtsboa.org.  Here are the measures for each instrument:

Eventually there will be links to Smart Music and recordings so that you can use those as tools.  Please start practicing this now rather than later!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Friday 8/24 Announcements

Happy Friday!  Two weeks down and we have been busy reviewing for our 7th and 8th graders and have learned 3 notes for our 6th grade!  All students should have Essential Elements Book One for 6th grade, finishing book one and moving to book 2 by mid Sept. for 7th grade, and finishing book 2 and moving to book 3 by mid Sept. for 8th grade.  Next week in 6th grade I hope to learn two more notes, take away the letter names so that students are reading notes only, and hopefully play our first "real" song #14 Rolling Along.  7th grade has been reviewing time signatures and dotted quarter note rhythms and will continue those rhythms and crossing the break for the clarinets in hopes of getting to where we left off last year (around #132).  8th grade has been reviewing cut time and 6/8 time signatures this week in book two and have just received the Bartlett High 8th grade night music to start working on it (Sept. 28).   Both 7th and 8th grade will be getting the Appling pep band music next week to start working on it for our Sept. 20 football game.

Tomorrow is our Appling Band pool party at Tate Romero's house from 4-8.  The address is 3562 Morning Dew Lane.  Bring $3 for pizza and boys bring an appetizer and girls bring a dessert.  Gonna be a great time!

Next week our after school practices start.  Our 7th and 8th graders are able to stay on Monday (Woodwinds) and Wednesday (brass and percussion) to get help on their All-West TN band music.  I hope to have the marked sections of the All-West music done for our Appling Honor Band auditions.  Our 6th graders and 7th/8th grade peer tutors are able to stay on Tuesdays to get help.  These practices are over at 4:00 and pick up in the back parking lot.  Bring a snack or money to buy something from the concession stand.

We will be voting on band t-shirt designs at the end of next week.  Please bring in designs on Tuesday during class.  You can go online to look at ideas or go to Custom Ink to design your own.

Orientation nights are next Monday 8/27 for 6th grade and next Wednesday 8/29 for 7th/8th grade.  I hope to see you there.  If you need to drop off any supplies and wish list items you can do it that night.

We have had 97 of 114 band members return the colored papers from the band packet.  We will be starting our emails very soon.
We have only received 38 out of 114 members' band fee.  It is $125 and checks made to Appling Middle School.  These are due 9/1.  This covers the Smart Music subscription, West TN solo and ensemble registration fee, All-West TN band audition fee, concert facility rental, banquet facility rental and awards for banquet, sheet music and copying expenses, transportation costs, school instrument costs and repairs, etc..... Computers are coming next week and we have to pay about $4500 for Smart Music subscriptions so please get in your fee.

Please make sure instruments are being taken home and you are getting into a practice routine.  Remember to practice only on the days that you eat :).

Have a great weekend!
