Jazz Band performance 5/20, Pizza Social Night

A reminder about our jazz band performance on Monday 5/20.  We will be meeting at 4:20 at Appling for those that need a ride or can help with equipment.  I have Shedd, Wright, Grimes, and Watson that said they could help.  Seven kids said they didn't have their own stand and we will bring you one - Mason T, Ayla, Tate, Alexis, Caleb, Eirnin, Luke.  Everyone else...... bring own stand please.  Make sure you have all of your music!  We are wearing concert black.  If you aren't meeting us at Appling, you are to meet us at Robinwood on Whitten Rd. (near Hwy 70) at 4:40 so that we can set up and perform at 5.  We will be performing while they are eating dinner and will perform until 6 and then head to Pizza Social.  Still trying to figure out if we are performing there too or just eating...... people not getting back to us and we should hear tomorrow morning.
I'm looking forward to showing y'all off and performing one last time this school year.  I will be in touch with everyone about the rehearsal schedule for the Aug. 9 performance (VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT!!).
Help spread the word on social media about Pizza Social fundraiser night for the Appling Band tomorrow night!

Announcements for 5/13 Week

Our banquet was soooo nice!  It was great to fellowship together and to recognize our students for all of their hard work!   Thank you again to Jeremy Stinson for arranging the catering and for Aimee Hale who helped with all of the decorating.  We are going to miss all of these 8th graders so much and wish them the best of luck in high school!
This is a big week.... concert week!!!
Monday will be 6th grade required rehearsal until 4 and Wednesday will be 7th grade required rehearsal until 4.  Please bring a snack because the concession stand is closed for the year.  Pick up in the back parking lot.
Our spring concerts are Tuesday night for 6th grade and jazz band at 6:30 at New Hope and Thursday night for 7th,8th, and honor band at 6:30 at New Hope.  Be there for set up and warm up at 6 and come dressed in concert black which is white shirt (guys wear a tie), black bottoms, black shoes (and black socks if you wear them).  Jazz band will wear all black.
I REALLY need help with equipment and set up/tear down.  We will be meeting at Appling at 5:20 to load.  Especially Tuesday because I am having some procedures done on my legs and won't be able to do a lot myself.  Please email me at [email protected] if you can help.
I also really need some parents to sit with students while they are not performing and monitor them.  Let me know if you can help with that too.  Thanks in advance!
Make sure to have school instruments ready to turn in on Friday for inventory.  All students will be held responsible for any damages that have occurred.
Jazz band students received a letter on purple paper on Friday.... please return that commitment letter asap so that we can make plans for the May 20 Robinwood/Pizza Social event and also the BCS system wide inservice that we have been invited to..... sooooo excited about that!
Ready for a great few last weeks of school!

Solo and Ensemble Festival Reminders

I will see everyone at 12:45 at Elmore Park Middle School tomorrow.  Our assigned block of time is 1:15-2:15.  Wear something nice.  Make sure to have your judge's copy of your music because there will not be a copy machine available.  Find me in the gym when you get there to get your judge's form.  Leave your cases in the car if you can.  Bring wire music stands for warm up if you have them.
You have worked hard and I'm looking forward to our Appling kids earning some medals!

2019 Jazz Festival permission form and need HELP

I only have 7 of my 20 jazz band members that have turned in jazz festival permission slips that were due Wednesday.  Our festival is next Tuesday April 9 at Overton High.  I have attached the details in the letter but I desperately need more drivers.  I only have myself and one other driver signed up and that is only room for about 12 kids max and doesn't include room for instruments.  I need about 3 more drivers to be at Appling at 4 pm on Tuesday.  Can you email me at  [email protected] asap if you can help out?
Thanks!
Remember we have practice on Monday!

Announcements Week of April 1

This is Solo/Ensemble Festival Week! It is this Saturday April 6 at Elmore Park Middle and we are assigned 1:15-2:15.    Check the letter that was given out in class and on the webpage for details.  You need to make sure you get the judge's copy of your music.  There will be help sessions this Thursday morning at 6 am and Friday after school until 3:30 if you need a time and a place to practice (ensembles) or help from me.  Students can be using Smart Music as a tool to help them too.   Remember this is a REQUIRED event and part of your grade.
Honor and jazz band will meet this week - Honor band Monday/Wednesday and Jazz Band Tuesday.  Honor Band did a GREAT job on their elementary tour last week.... so proud!  Jazz Band has jazz festival next Tuesday April 9 and a permission slip was given out on Friday that is due asap.  All trip payments (student and chaperone/follower) should be paid in full April 1.  The trip meeting is scheduled for April 16.  We will be discussing trip t-shirt design and colors this week.  Mark your calendar for April 30 where both groups will perform at 6th grade orientation.
Spring Fling is April 13 from 1-4.  I should know performance times this week for honor and jazz band.  We will also need parents to sign up for shifts to help us work our booth (will know what we are selling this week as well).
Smart Music assignments were posted over the weekend and are due on Tuesday April 9 so I can get them listened to in time for interims.   They are over songs we have been doing in the book:
6th grade:#114, 117, 118, and 131 (top)
7th grade: #120, 126, 128, and 133
8th grade:  #99, 113, 126, and 162

There is a change for the date for the Band Awards Banquet..... it is not May 7 but Thursday May 9 at Faith Baptist.  Please note this change and details/info will be given out later.
Our spring concerts are lined up for May 14 (6th and jazz) and May 16 (7th,8th, and honor band) and kids are working on music for this.  Please encourage them to practice.
Thanks and let's have an awesome week!

Announcements Week of March 18

Welcome back to the last nine weeks.  We are on the final push to the end of the year.  This will be a busy nine weeks with several events happening during this time.  If you are participating the in spring trip, the next payment of $75 is due on Monday, March 18th.  If you participated in the fundraiser and want to apply the amount earned, make sure you turn in your fundraiser on Friday, March 22 and your remaining balance will be e-mailed to you.  The final trip payment will be due on April 1st.

Weekly calendar:

Monday, March 18 - Honor Band - 2:15 - 4pm

Tuesday, March 19 - Jazz Band - 2:15 - 4pm

Wednesday, March 20 - Honor Band - 2:15 - 4pm - special guest Dr. Albert Nguyen from University of Memphis!  Best attendance and behavior!

Friday, March 22 - Clara Clark Fundraiser due (Honor and Jazz Band)

Also next Wednesday morning 3/27 will be our elementary tour for honor band to travel to Ellendale and Oak Elementary schools.  Permission slips will go out tomorrow (3/18) and we need LOTS and LOTs of parents to help with equipment and loading and unloading because they will not provide any of the percussion equipment and music stands.  We will be gone in the 8:30-10:30 am range if anyone can help and perhaps take the morning off from work.  Please let me know asap.
Because of the elementary tour, we will flip flop honor and jazz band next week and rehearse honor band 3/25 and 3/26 and have jazz band rehearse 3/27.
Also.... be practicing for the Solo/Ensemble Festival on April 6.  EVERYONE has been signed up (except for four students who contacted me with conflicts who will be performing for me in class) and several of our students will be performing in ensembles that need to be practicing together.  Details should be coming soon with assigned times and information.
If you know any upcoming 6th grader going to any of the Bartlett City middle schools, we will be having our first annual "instrument test drive" on Saturday 3/30 from 9 am-noon for students to test instruments.  Should be a lot of fun and  a chance to recruit for our band programs.
Have a great week!

Smart Music due tomorrow 3/3 and Solo/Ensemble Registration deadline

Smart music solos are due tomorrow night  (Sunday) 3/3.  Students are to submit two of the posted solos for a grade and the others can be for extra credit but you are are strongly encouraged to do them.  If you are a 7th or 8th grader who did not audition for All-West TN band then you need to complete all of them.  PLEASE put time and effort into these.  Since they are longer, it will be harder to get a higher grade.  Please strive for 80% or higher before submitting. Listen back to yourself and make sure you are doing the dynamics, articulation, and all of the extras that the computer can't score you on.  If you are a percussionist, the bells are not going to assessed correctly by the computer because it is flute music, so you will need to listen back to yourself carefully before submitting and I will give you a score.
Everyone is being signed up for a solo at the Solo/Ensemble Festival on April 6 at Elmore Park Middle.  It is required and part of what we do in the Appling Band program.  I will know a specific performance time closer to the date (last year we were at 3-3:30).  This is part of your band fee and we are paying $10 for you to go.  If you would like to do more than one event (another solo or an ensemble - duet, trio, quartet, quintet) then you will need to pay $10 per person to go and I need that by this Wednesday March 6.  We are working on some ensembles in 7th and 8th grade band class and I would love to have some of those performed.   If you make a check please make payable to Appling Middle.
If you have a conflict with April 6 solo/ensemble festival, please let me know ASAP in writing so that I do not sign you up.  You will perform your solo in front of the class and not be eligible for a medal but will be excused if I know in advance.
Thanks and let me know if you have any questions or concerns at [email protected].

Honor Band Performance Tuesday 2/19

The Appling Honor Band will perform this Tuesday night 2/19 at 6:30 pm at New Hope Christian Church.  Please be there no later than 6 pm and sit on the left side when walking in. Elmore Park will perform first, then Bon Lin band, Appling band, and then Appling/Elmore Park orchestra.  The whole concert should last about an hour.  This is a free concert but donations will be accepted.  There is an event created on our A.M.S. Band Bartlett, TN Facebook page so please share and spread the word.
Please leave cases in the car.  Everyone please pitch in with helping with equipment (Elmore and Bon Lin will bring chairs, stands, and percussion equipment).  Please wear band uniform that was brought home last week along with black shoes and socks.  Uniforms need to be hung properly when you get home and brought back to school on Wednesday with honor band rehearsal after school on Wednesday.  We will go over the judge's feedback and prepare for the WTSBOA concert festival in March.
Looking forward to a great performance!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Smart Music assigned

Smart Music has been assigned for all grade levels.  This 3rd nine weeks will be more important for smart music assignments to be done and time spent for accuracy because there are not "cushie" grades with required rehearsals and concerts where you can show up and participate and get points like there were 1st and 2nd nine weeks periods.... students will have to put forth the time and practice and turn in their smart music assignments to be accountable for their grade.  All grades will have a group of five songs from the book due 2/24 (see below) and will also have solo songs due 3/3 (students will submit two of the solos listed and any others can be extra credit.  7th and 8th graders who did not audition for all west band will need to submit six).  Please submit time on these assignments, do not procrastinate, and submit only your best work (simply recording and submitting is not acceptable).  Percussionists need to do these assignments on bells.
6th grade:  #90, 91, 98, 106, 108
7th grade:  #85, 93, 99, 106, 115
8th grade:  #76, 81, 92, 159, 160

Let me know if you have any questions.  Happy practicing!
