Thank you/End of year Pool Party

Thank you all for a great year!  We were very busy and the students learned a lot and performed well!  I'm looking forward to next year with my returning members and looking forward to seeing what our now freshmen students do in the Bartlett High School Band!
Thank you for the wonderful laptop rolling bag that people pitched in on for me and gave to me at the banquet..... I love it!  And thank you to everyone for their sweet cards and gifts......I have the best students and parents.
We are ON for our pool party tomorrow Saturday May 26 at Emily McDaniel's house.  Thank you so much to her parents for volunteering to host our band.  We have been watching the weather and it looks like scattered showers on the front end and then tapering off so we decided to extended it to 12-5 instead of 12-4.  Please bring a dessert or appetizer to share.  If you need her address again, please message me on Remind or send me an email tonight or in the morning.  Looking forward to some fun!
We have several of our students attending the University of Memphis music camp on June 18-23 and there is still time to sign up.  I also would like to invite you to perform in the Bartlett Community Band with us that meets on Monday nights from 7-9 at Whitten Road Baptist Church.  There are many students that perform with us during the summer and it would be a great way to keep up your skills and work on sight-reading.
Have a wonderful summer!  Email me if you need anything at [email protected]

The deadline has past for our band banquet reservations for next Tuesday night's band banquet.  If you pre-ordered tickets, there will be someone checking you off when you enter Faith and dinner will be served at 5:30.  Dress is semi-formal/dressy casual (no jeans.... similar to what you wore for Solo/Ensemble Festival).  There will be a slideshow of our year's events.  Awards will start at 6:30 and if you did not order a dinner ticket, you may still come to awards.  I'm looking forward to celebrating our year!
6th and 7th graders will not need instruments next Tuesday because we will be playing a review game on the computer while we still have them..... but you will need instruments the rest of the week.  8th grade will play this review game Friday 5/11 so please bring laptops to class and no instruments..... 8th grade will need instruments next week.
6th grade has Smart Music assignments due this Sunday May 13.... sections of your concert music.
The jazz band will plan to perform next Thursday 5/17 from 5-5:45 at Pizza Social as part of our give back night.  Please meet there by 4:45 or at Appling by 4:20 to load equipment and if you need a ride.
All school instruments are due next Friday 5/18 for check in and cleaning/repairs.
8th graders...... look for information on a separate post for the packet that was given out at the meeting Tuesday night and also online payment information if you need to pay your band fee.  It is very important that you take care of that next week before school is out.
I think that is all.  Things are winding down and it has been a good year with the Appling Band!

Announcements for 2/11 Week

Congratulations to the All-West TN Band members for outstanding performances this past weekend!  We were definitely well represented with 15 members!  I have posted pictures on our A.M.S. Band Bartlett, TN Facebook page if you want to take a look.
The bands will be busy working in their books this week and continuing to work on the solo/ensemble music that was distributed last week.  I have put solo/ensemble songs on your Smart Music and you are to submit two of them (your choice and with the highest scores) for a grade and any more than that can be for extra credit.  These are due by Sunday, March 4.  Please work hard on these and only submit your best work!
Students will be sightreading new music this week also to select songs for our spring concert.
Honor and jazz band 2nd spring trip payment was due Feb. 1 and there are still a few that have not turned that in.  Please get this in asap.  The follower form is due by March 1.
Honor and jazz bands are busy rehearsing for upcoming West TN festivals.  I have registered honor band for concert festival which will be March 6 or 7.  Honor band will be performing in a pre-festival concert on Tuesday Feb. 27 at 6:30 at New Hope Christian Church along with our Appling strings, Elmore Park Honor Band, and Bon Lin Honor Band.  We will be receiving feedback from guest directors so that we can use that to better ourselves for upcoming competitions.  We will be wearing uniforms to this event and will be fitting students at the next four rehearsals...... it is SUPER IMPORTANT that everyone is here at these rehearsals.
The Christian Brothers Honor Band is next Friday 2/23 and Saturday 2/24.  Applications were distributed in class or can be found on our webpage at www.applingband.com  I need these applications and the $25 registration fee by this Tuesday 2/12 so that I can mail to them by Friday and start coordinating car pools.  I highly encourage you to participate in this event if you want to.  I have heard that there are already over 60 participants, so a bigger year than last year.
I am available during parent/teacher conferences this Thursday evening if anyone needs to speak to me or you may email me any time at [email protected].
Looking forward to a great week!

Good morning!  We are still moving along in our method books with 6th grade on #101 and following (reviewing phrases, learning dotted quarter note rhythms, and reviewing slur articulations), 7th grade on #81 and following (learning dotted eighth/16th patterns) and 8th grade with #65 and following (key of Ab scales, exercises, songs, and sight reading).  All groups will receive solo and ensemble festival music this week for the April 7 Solo/Ensemble Festival and will start working on that in class.
There is a very important band booster meeting Tuesday Feb. 6 at 6:00 pm in the band room.  We will discuss upcoming events, fundraisers, and preliminary information on the spring trip to St. Louis.
Our 15 students that made the All-West TN Band will be attending a three day clinic this Thursday through Saturday at the Cook Convention Center.  Those students need to bring luggage to school Thursday morning and store in one of the practice rooms.  You will need to report to the band room at the beginning of 4th period at 10:20, eat lunch with 7th grade at 10:29 and then we will leave right when we return from lunch hopefully by 11.  Don't forget meal $, breakfast food and snacks for yourself and/or to share, black shoes/socks, instruments and music (with plenty of extra reeds), and jackets for when we walk outside.  The concert is at 8:30 Saturday morning at the Cannon Center and is open to the public..... I encourage everyone to attend to hear some fantastic music and support your classmates.  The All-West jazz and orchestra concert is Friday night at 6:30 if you would like to also attend that.
The Christian Brothers High School honor band registration form and $25 registration fee (made to CBHS) is due by next Tuesday 2/13 and the event is 2/23/24.
Everyone  please continue to practice and work hard.  New Smart Music assignments will be posted soon.
Have a great week!

Allwest Rescheduled for 1/20

The All-West TN band auditions have been rescheduled due to the weather for next Saturday 1/20.  Same location and times.  This was the best decision for everyone's safety.  Now we have an extra week to practice.
Because of this the Memphis Area Honor Band that was originally scheduled for Jan. 18-20 is now cancelled.  I will be returning everyone's money.  Hopefully you may consider the Christian Brothers High Honor band on Feb. 23-24.
Let me know if you have any questions.

All-West Auditions - Inclement Weather Announcement

Here is the announcement that was posted by the WTSBOA executive board regarding All-West auditions on Saturday:

WTSBOA Directors,

Regardless of weather conditions, the All West Honor Band auditions will still take place this Saturday at Northside High School in Jackson. There is simply no way to reschedule the audition date.

Please communicate to your students that we understand the challenging and potentially dangerous situation and leave the final decision-making to the parent.  Parents will need to determine the best action, if any, concerning their student. We also advise students to take their instruments home on Thursday just in case schools are closed on Friday.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.  Though we apologize for the situation, it is in fact outside our control, and all we can do is follow protocol and hope for a safe weekend.

WTSBOA Executive Board

So.....there are just too many logistics to consider with hosting this event and hiring judges for all of the instruments for middle school, 9-10 bands, 11-12 bands, and jazz bands and they can't reschedule it.   Most of our students have been working really, really hard on their music, scales, and sight-reading skills for this audition.  I know that I am "requiring" it of my 7th and 8th grade non beginners, but you need to make the best decision for your family.  I know this is a big sacrifice of time, driving, etc..... I cannot control the weather but do know that it is all interstate and then the Highland Ave exit so those roads should be ok.  If they are having this anyway, it could turn out better in that some students would be unable to attend and therefore up the percentage of the chance of making it because of less competition.  If students go to the All-West audition, then they will get a full credit grade for following through with their audition.  If students cannot attend, then they will play their music for me for a grade.

Students can audition early and not late.  Please allow even more time to travel to Jackson.  If anyone needs to ride with me, I am leaving at 5:30 am because I have a director meeting at 7.  I will just need them to find a ride home with someone else because I am going on to Nashville with my kids for my daughter's Governor's School audition on Sunday.  If you need to arrange a carpool, please check the chronological list of times that I posted earlier in the letter and perhaps someone can help you.

Also..... make sure ALL INSTRUMENTS are taken home with you on Thursday in case we are not in school on Friday.

Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.  Thanks.

Angela Sanders
